Columbus Georgia is a Southern city where American history and culture converge. Columbus was founded in 1828 by an act of the Georgia legislature and is the last planned city of the original thirteen colonies. Located on the bank of the Chattahoochee River, Columbus became Georgia's frontier port city and a manufacturing and textile hub. Today, Columbus is Georgia's thrid largest city.

Columbus was established along the Chattahoochee River in an area opposite the Creek Indians' trading center. This trading center was near the falls that were the subject of lore told by Spanish explorers. Cotton and other goods were brought to the area by steamboats.

Today, the Columbus Riverwalk runs along the bank of the Chattahoochee River and features sites from the city's establishment as a frontier port. Such sites include the Kyle Indian Mound, Woodlands Era Indian site, Marshall's Indian Trading Post, Bull Creek and the Bull Creek Bridge. Bull Creek is the site where artifacts dating back to the days of Christopher Columbus were found. These artifacts told the story of the Indians who inhabited the area.

The city was laid out by its five original commissioners. Homes were built in the summer months. The Walker-Peters-Langdon House, located at 716 Broadway, was built in 1828. It is considered to be Columbus' oldest house. This Federal cottage and other homes from that century are featured on the Columbus Heritage Tour.

The Columbus Museum features 18th century furniture, Native American crafts as well as American Impressionist paintings and contemporary art. The Heritage Tour also includes the home of John S. Pemberton, inventor of Coca-Cola. This home features the lab where Pemberton developed the world's favorite soft drink. Columbus' Historic District features brick paved street and Heritage Park. The park contains life size bronzed statues and celebrates the contributions made to the city during the Industrial Revolution.
